WSET Wine Level 1

Take your first step into the world of professional wine education with the WSET Level 1 Award in Wines. This internationally recognised course introduces the key styles of wine, food pairing principles and systematic tasting, providing the perfect foundation for beginners, hospitality professionals and passionate wine enthusiasts.

Summary

The Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Level 1 Award in Wine (formerly known as the Foundation Certificate) is an ideal starting point for anyone who is considering embarking on a professional career in the drinks industry or those with no little or prior experience of wine tasting.

It is an enjoyable, relaxed and interactive course which is completed in a single day, including the exam, making it easy to fit in with busy working schedules.

WSET Level 1 Award in Wines has full accreditation from OfQual as part of the UK Government’s Qualifications & Credits Framework as a Level 1 Vocational Qualification.

What Will I Learn?

During the course, you will cover:

By the end of the course, you will be able to taste wine using a globally recognised method, recognise key wine styles, and identify the main characteristics of important grape varieties. You will also understand the core principles of food and wine pairing and how to apply them confidently to your own choices.

Assessment
  • Examination: The Level 1 Award in Wines assessment consists of 30 multiple-choice questions, to be completed within 45 minutes. To pass the exam, you must achieve a score of 70% or higher.
  • Certification: Successful candidates will be issued with a secure digital certificate by WSET, which you will be able to print for framing and a lapel pin (a globally recognised mark of wine knowledge). 
  • Results: This qualification is Ofqual regulated and results are issued approximately two working weeks after the exam.

WSET Wine Level 2

Build real confidence in wine with the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines. Through guided tastings and structured learning, you will explore the world’s major grape varieties, wine regions and production methods while earning an internationally recognised qualification valued across the global wine and hospitality industry.

The WSET Level 2 Award in Wines is designed to build real confidence and understanding. You will begin by learning the WSET Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT) - the globally recognised method for analysing and describing wines with clarity and precision.

From there, the course explores how environmental influences, vineyard practices, winemaking decisions, and maturation techniques shape a wine’s style and quality.

You will study eight principal grape varieties in depth, discovering how they express themselves across different regions. In addition, you will explore 22 regionally important grape varieties and examine how wine styles vary across 70 geographical indications (GIs). The programme also covers sparkling wines, fortified wines, and the production methods that define them. The programme blends theoretical knowledge with hands-on practice since attendants will taste 38 wines from around the world throughout the course. 

The course includes 18 hours of expert-led tuition, providing structured guidance and support, alongside 14 hours of recommended home study to consolidate and deepen your understanding at your own pace.

Assessment takes place at the end of the course in the form of a 60-minute multiple-choice examination, designed to evaluate your knowledge and reinforce your progression as a confident wine enthusiast. Successful candidates receive an official digital certificate and the WSET lapel pin.

No prior experience is necessary to enrol. However, students who have completed the WSET Level 1 Award in Wines may find it beneficial preparation for achieving the strongest possible results.

  • Examination: 60-minute multiple-choice exam designed to test your understanding of wine styles, regions, and tasting techniques. The exam includes 50 multiple-choice questions, and a minimum of 55% is required to pass. 
  • Certification: Successful candidates will be issued with a secure digital certificate by WSET, which you will be able to print for framing and a lapel pin (a globally recognised mark of wine knowledge). 
  • Results: This qualification is Ofqual regulated and results are issued approximately two working weeks after the exam.

WSET Wine Level 3

This WSET Level 3 Wine Course is an internationally recognised qualification designed for passionate wine lovers and industry professionals. Whether you are an enthusiast looking to explore wine in a structured and immersive way or a hospitality professional aiming to advise with confidence, this course will give you the expertise to analyze, assess, and select wines with authority. You will uncover what shapes the style, quality, and price of the world’s most important still, sparkling, and fortified wines, while refining your tasting skills with over 60 wines.

Level 3 is a 5-day immersive journey into the world of wine, where you will uncover the fascinating connection between viticulture, winemaking, and the wine in your glass. You will fully understand how nature (vine growing factors) and human intervention (winemaking) can affect style, quality and price of the final product.

Through guided exploration from our expert educators, you will learn why wines taste the way they do, from the rich, buttery notes of a Californian Chardonnay to the distinctive eucalyptus aroma of a Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon. 

Throughout the course, you will taste over 60 wines, reinforcing your knowledge with every sip and sharpening your ability to assess quality, style, and origin with confidence. 

The course includes 32.5 guided learning hours including the 2.5 hour examination. The latter is broken down into a practical part, where you will blind taste 2 wines in 30 minutes, and a theory part, consisting of 50 multiple-choice questions and 4 open questions.

Assessment

he WSET Level 3 will end with a 2.5 hour examination. The latter is broken down into: 

  • A theory examination: A closed‑book exam completed in 2 hours.
    It has two parts:
    Part 1: 50 multiple‑choice questions (testing factual knowledge).
    Part 2: Short written answers (4 questions, focusing on applying your knowledge).
    You need to score at least 55% in each part to pass this unit.
  • A tasting examination

A 30‑minute blind tasting of two wines, conducted on the same day as the theory exam. You will use the WSET Level 3 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT) to describe and evaluate wines.

To be awarded the WSET Level 3 Award in Wines, you must:
Pass both units (theory and tasting), achieving at least 55% in each.

Your overall result is expressed as a grade based on your average across both units:

  • Pass: 55% – 64%
    Pass with Merit: 65% – 79%
  • Pass with Distinction: 80%+ (with no individual part below 65%)

Successful candidates receive a globally recognised digital WSET certificate and the WSET lapel pin.

FAQ

Do I Need Any Prior Knowledge?

The entry requirements depend on the WSET level you choose:

WSET Level 1 Award in Wines

No previous wine knowledge or tasting experience is required. This course is designed for complete beginners and anyone looking to take their first structured step into the world of wine.

WSET Level 2 Award in Wines

No formal qualifications are required to enrol. However, completing WSET Level 1 or having equivalent basic wine knowledge is recommended to help you get the most from the course.

WSET Level 3 Award in Wines

WSET recommends that candidates hold the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines or demonstrate equivalent knowledge before enrolling. If you have not completed Level 2 but believe you already possess the necessary background, we offer an online entry test to assess your readiness for Level 3 study.

Additional Requirements

  • All classes are delivered in English, so a good level of spoken and written English is recommended.
  • Participants must be at least 18 years old.
